ABOUT the McCluskieganj :
Moved by the beauty of McCluskieganj, a journalist in the US described it as a “fabled land where the sienna-tiled houses seem picked out of a fairy tale, where butterflies spatter their colour with gay abandon, where the rays of the sun get breathless tearing past dense forest canopy, where the river flows fearlessly, where the hibiscus grows wantonly and where everywhere there is a ceremony of innocence”.

The picturesque hamlet was promoted as an Anglo-Indian homeland by a businessman Ernest Timothy McCluskie from Calcutta presently Kolkata. He floated a company, Colonization Society of India Ltd., in 1933 and bought 10,000 acres of land from the king of Ratu ,at what was known as Lapra or Gang. The company offered agricultural plots at Rs 50 per acre and residential plots at Rs 250 per acre to Anglo-Indians so that they could lead their own life. The place, near Kalahari, came to be known as ‘Little England’. The plateau nestled at heights ranging from 1,620 feet above sea-level near the railway station to 2,200 feet to the South and had as many as four rivers flowing through it. While McCluskie dreamt of a mooluk for Anglo-Indians, as Muslims dreamt of Pakistan, the dream fell through after India won her independence.
English cottages, green meadows, tall trees and meandering roads nestling next to hills and forests, lent a unique ambiance to the place. Even when the Anglo-Indian families began to move out after the world war ended, India won her independence and the railway track declined in importance, other well-heeled Indians moved into the houses that boasted of gardens, orchards and lawns.

Retired IAS officer A.K.M. Hasan bought a house with 16 cottahs of land at McCluskieganj way back in 1969 for the princely sum of Rs 16,000. He lived there happily enough till 2002 or so when absence of good hospitals and medical facilities at Mccluskieganj forced him to leave. Brigadiers and retired generals from the Indian Army, among them Lt Gen. Maya Das and Lt Gen. Baljeet Singh, were among those who made McCluskieganj their home.

Things to do :
Hay time is faded away , Anglo- Indians has already left the place one by one , now numerous residents have set up guest houses on that abandon rundown red roofed Bungalows that serve as tourist lodges during the holidays and hostel for schoolchildren when Don Bosco is in session. The guest houses provide food and lodging and even arrange cabs for trips to the river, Chhati Nadi famously known as Dega degi. The transportation charges are nominal and the river is safe with no one ever hearing of flash floods. Dip your feet in the water and enjoy the view of the hilly terrain. On the way to McCluskieganj from ranchi by road, you will pass a huge hill on your left, which by virtue of its unusual shape is called McCluskie’s Nose ( NAKHTA PAHAR ). Further down, about 6 km from the Ganj, there is a deserted place called DULI , where a temple with an exclusively stunning Idol of Radha Krishna inside and a mosque stand calmly side by side with identical architecture except the top that makes the differences along with the half built Gurdwara & a proposed church carrying only the bamboo made cross significantly … makes you speechless……………..
Three kilometre ahead is a huge Barh/Gullar tree which the early settlers had aptly named Sunset Point. Those of you who like to go off the beaten track will enjoy the journey immensely.
Small shops dot the area and the people are friendly and hospitable. I used to visit McCluskieganj once a year science 20-12 and have never had a less than memorable experience.
McCluskieganj has come across a long way from it’s FAIRY TALE like colonial past , Anglo- Indians has already left away , but still stood silently along with all it’s innocence , churches hidden among st trees , unnamed little flowers roses it’s head carelessly , flooded the McCluskieganj canvas with color , ghost like rundown abandoned Anglo- Indian Bungalows stands on the way to silent Dega Degi river bed with a half broken small bridge and hilly terrain added the perfection , Jagriti Bihar an Irish Academy, a little Railway stations with a very few whistle sounds a day, can have a rare glimpse of one and only Durga idol during puja make you feel home away from home and the last the guest house carries it’s past cleanly and comfortably ,waiting for you . Along with all McCluskieganj became a pleasant weekend spot with the time.
Best time or Best Season to visit  :
Season wise Autumn ,Winter & spring month wise September middle to March till  maximum can extend till 1st half of April is the perfect time to visit . Winter from December Middle  to January Middle  is really chili, sometimes  temperature dips down closed to 1 Degree Celsius at night .
How to reach McCluskieganj :
By road ,from Kolkata to Ranchi is about 410 to 450 km , take the road to Daltonganj from Ranchi. Bijupara is about 36 to 40 km down the road. From there, turn right towards Khalari. A short drive of 13 km will get you to a small village called Chama. Take the left and drive 12 km to McCluskieganj .There is another way via Kothari through Duli., total 60 to 70 km from Ranchi.
By Train , Nearest rail head is McCluskieganj station. Catch Shaktipunj Express, which leaves Howrah station at 1.10 pm and reaches McCluskieganj at 11.00 pm. If you inform us in advance , guesthouse will arrange car that will pick you up at the station . The other option is taking an overnight train from Howrah to Ranchi (Howrah-Hatia Express is an option. It leaves Howrah at 9.55 pm daily and reaches Ranchi at 7.30 am). You can also fly to Ranchi.
STAYING AT Mccluskieganj :
Now there are lot guest house to stay at Ganj .We can arrange for you …all are basically  HomeStay type, served food also.

Around the McCluskieganj & CONCLUESSION :

McCluskieganj is under JHARKHAND and about 70 km from it’s capital Ranchi . In Near By Site Seeing  First Come  KRANTI FALLS ( 40km ) , TIRU FALLS ( 25-30 km) , NAMODAG ( 30km)   &

Next as Ranchi outskirts  , basically Ranchi is surrounded by the falls like HUNDRU , JONDHRA ( JONA) , DASAM  , HIRNI & lots of hills in the horizon , apart from that NETARHAT ( 270 km ) , BETLA FOREST at PALAMU (200km),
PATRATU DAM , HAZARIBAGH…..
You can club McCluskieganj with Ranchi & others , but if you would like to feel the charm of McCluskieganj then visit McCluskieganj & only McCluskieganj itself …… along with NAMODAG  , KRANTI FALLS , TIRU FALLS , Scale NAKHTA PAHAR as outskirts of MCcluskieganj & HITKORI the famous BHADRAKALI TEMPLE...  around 100 km  from Mccluskieganj  …you may like it ………………. if  interested  and from Kolkata having  car  then it will be always better to visit HITKORI at the time  of return from  Mccluskieganj …  TILAIYA Dam  is not very far from here , around 2 and half  hours  journey ..  can visit  RAJGIR , NALANDA , GAYA  & BOUDH GAYA … but  in this trip always better to stay at  Rajgir ( 1 to 2 nights ) and Bodh Gaya ( 1 night ) definitely it deserve at least 2 to 3 days to complete  fully …  BY CAR  IT WILL BE 3  & 1/2 hrs  JOURNEY  to Reach Bodh Gaya  and from Bodh Gaya  to Rajgir  another 90 kms around  max 1 & 1/2 hrs …  and

** Don’t Miss the SUNSET from the  abundant  WATCH TOWER Near by the Heritage bungalow , have to walk down more precisely have to climb up through the bush & it’s bit far but can be covered on walking  from the HERITAGE BUNGALOW. Always better be climbed in the first morning because it’s deserted atop ,better be there in a group specially if you are accompanied with ladies, enjoy the areal  view of McCLUSKIEGANJ  & secondly walking down the river named  “CHATTI” specially in winter afternoon ….  simply amazing, will touch your soul softly,…..
***must Scale NAKHTA PAHAR if possible , view from Top is breathless , far far better than the Sunset from the Watch Tower….you may resembles yourself with FANTOM after reaching at the Top …will took 50 to 1 hr 30 minutes  , best time to scale is December to February and always avoid Rain & Foggy weather.
All the accommodations available on my site are good from there own angle of facilities and look wise and more important price wise , food servings are good also. If you would like stay with in the lap of the nature , accommodation are good enough and has a personal touch on hospitality ,feel like home away from home  then OPTION 1 is for you … after that  it can be OPTION 2. The Last option the OPTION 3 .. looking for an accommodation that is more than good at McCluskieganj and would like to have an accommodation of four or more family under the same roof with a hotel type service having a separate dinning hall .Served good food and with an adjacent big ground in conjunction with a few good activity to tone your body and sole then  OPTION 3 is perfect choice for you all.. ..now the choice is yours only.
...  and the Last word …Don’t be in illusion of expecting extraordinary or exceptional  things from McCluskieganj as an offbeat location. Somewhere in the net McCluskieganj  has been described or praised as ” Mini London ” near by Ranchi at Jharkhand . If you ask me then i will say that the weather is  unpolluted ,people are good and simple all around. As a long as a weekend trip it is really good option for the Ranchi dweller as well as the residents of West Bengal also,in addition with Netarhat , Betla and Ranchi it can be a gentle vacation to be remembered.

Here  at McCluskieganj the time will passes by just doing nothing ,  keep on sitting idle on the bungalow premises chatting among the closed ones or the friends.Having the warmth of Bonfire in the Coldest Winter evening  with snacks & beverages. But the thing  what you will love most and attract you to get back again at the Ganj is none other than the simple hearty hospitality from the  Heritage Bungalow owner Mr Rana ……..

An unforgettable memory

An unforgettable memory

This year on 2nd and 3rd Jan, we stayed in McCluskeyganj in a wonderful accommodation of Mr Sekhar Bose, named Gulmohar. The entire booking had been done by Mr Rajesh Chowdhury on behalf of Mr Bose. I got full cooperation and assistance from Mr Chowdhury regarding selection of property in McCluskeyganj and the booking of that. Not only that, he also helped me by providing information on Netarhat and Betala, whenever I asked him.

Regarding Gulmohar, it’s a huge area in which the Gulmohar has been built by Mr Bose last year. I am a frequent traveller, but till date I hardly have seen such a nice personality, like Mr Sekhar Bose. We had 4 kids altogether, among them 2 were less than 3 years. But we never felt anysorts of inconvenience for a single moment. We never felt that we are away from home. Food was also delicious, cooked by Madam herself for every single guest. We celebrated our son’s birthday there in a wonderful manner, which we will never forget and that credit also goes to Mr Bose.

McCluskeyganj is a wonderful place. One need to feel the essence of silence of nature there. One need to know the past of McCluskeyganj. The peace heaven is waiting for his guets to come.

My best wishes for GULMOHAR ! May it flourish more and more !

Thank you McCluskeyganj, Mr Chowdhury and Mr Bose afterall.

Our feeling and experience about MCcluskiegang

Our feeling and experience about MCcluskiegang

We had been to MCcluskiegang and stayed at Mr. Rana’s Country Cottage for two nights (26th & 27th January,’20).
We are fortunate that still such a serene place exists on earth. Mr. Rana is not just the owner but a true well wisher and ready to extend all possible help, if needed. Mrs. Rana is the pivot of the cottage and looks after the guests like an aunt/elder sister. She always keeps a close eye on everything. The cuisine she offers are excellent, whether it is Indian or western.
Bajrangi and Shyamsundar were always at beck and call and ever smiling. We also thoroughly enjoyed the company of Murphy,Caesar and Teddy (pets of Mr. and Mrs. Rana).
Now, the ambience of MCcluskiegang. It is still holding the old charm of the British era. Though many of the cottages have become almost beyond repair. But, you can, perhaps, still feel their presence.
We simply rested at the cottage, chatted, dined and strolled around and tried to breathe the fresh air, as much as it was possible.
Last but not the least. We must thank Mr. Rajesh for suggesting and arranging such a nice place at MCcluskiegang.
Those who love nature must visit MCcluskiegang.
Thanks and happy travelling.

Memories forever

Memories forever

Journey is the best part of reaching the Destination. Visiting McCluskeygunge was different. Adventure started once we reached the place. I will thank Rakesh bhai for guiding me through the journey. Being a remote place whatever we received was luxury. Identifying tourist and getting a traveller, is a different thing which Rakesh bhai has very well judged. I went with two senior citizens 70+ and found the place as one which provides happiness for all age groups. A serene and calm place will be enjoyed a lot by nature lovers. Will love to visit when the Palash blooms. Thank you. Jharna Panda

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

We planned a short family trip to Mcluskieganj this time….inspite of the negative attitudes of friends and relatives about this place. What a treasure hunt it was with nature unfolding its beauty at each end of the serpentine road from Netarhat to Mccluskiegunj. For nature lovers this is an ideal place to sit and enjoy the lush green meadows in the midst of silence . Added to this was the warm hospitality of Rana uncle and auntie …and the delicious cuisines prepared from their kitchen. The homestay was much better compared to Jharkhand tourism hotels at Netarhat and Betla. We are again planning to visit very soon.

Home away from home

Home away from home

I visited Mr. Rana’s Cottage and simply felt like it was like my home. I had my extended family of In-laws, mother and my own family with and we all were in complete awe of the place. One cannot expect anything better here and we are truly thankful to Mr. Rana and his wife for the hospitality they had extended during the stay. I would also sincerely than Rajesh for planning and arranging my entire trip which started in Netarhat and ended here. It was truly amazing how Rajesh gave details of everything that one needs while travelling and staying in home comfort. Thank you Rajesh once again.

Amazing Stay at Rana’s Country Cottage at McCluskieganj

Amazing Stay at Rana’s Country Cottage at McCluskieganj

Mr.Rajesh had planned a trip for us. After spending a day each at Netarhat, Maromar, and Betla, we reached McCluskieganj.

McCluskieganj was suggested by Mr.Rajesh primarily as a place to relax after the hectic trip, before we return to our busy lives. He had booked a room for us at Rana’s Country Cottage.

The moment we reached the Home Stay of Mr.Deepak Rana (more popular as Uncle) and his family, we were bowled over by their hospitality. In addition to the cozy accommodation, we also enjoyed the delicious dishes prepared (or, supervised) by Mrs.Rana or Aunty, as she is fondly called. Besides, the family’s assistant ShyamSunder was also prompt with the services for the guests.

The foods were fresh and tasted really good. When Aunty came to know that it was our wedding anniversary, she specially prepared an amazing pulao and chicken for us. Besides, the paranthas for breakfast as well as the pakoras for evening snacks were mouth-watering as well.

We also had the opportunity to talk to Mr.Deepak Rana’s mother, the 97-year young lady Mrs.KanchanPrabha, who comes from the Tripura Royal Family. She explained to us the history of McCluskieganj and also of the cottage – how she had bought a dilapidated bungalow inside the forest in 1962 and turned it into this amazing cottage.

A walk around the place in early morning was refreshing. We came across a number of birds and even a fox in the woods. If you’re there for just a day (as we did), you might find yourself appreciating the beauty of Rana’s Country Cottage and its amazing guests – the birds and the butterflies – and find the day pass by in no time at all.

The trip was so amazing that I would again like to thank Mr.Rajesh and LittleWings for arranging it in such a flawless manner.

A complete piece.

A complete piece.

we were at Mr.Rana’s Guest house for two days through Rajesh. It is an eye opener for us to stay with a vast land of greeneries rather than a so -called star hotels. The hospitality that we got from Rana’s family is beyond of language from welcoming to food and obviously on caring. we have very much enjoyed the noiseless vast land of saal that make a heaven piece of eyes. we were awaken by a lots of birds tune and went for sleep with the light of full moon through saal. The house of Mr Rana is not only heritage but giving us a new art & culture. we hope to come again.

Serene Hamlet

Serene Hamlet

Excellent Hospitality by Mr. & Mrs. Rana and their team. Special thanks to Mr. Rajesh for his detailed guidance for the entire tour.
Its a very nice place to rejuvinate from the city life. If one is travelling in a group, a couple of days at Mr. Rana’s place is just a wonderful experience.
The food is great, absolutely home made. We even had a excellent barbeque.
There is a small rivulet nearby the place. Very calm and serene. Definately a place to visit if you have 3 to 4 days in hand and want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
One final thanks to littlewings and Mr. & Mrs. Rana

FABULOUS SERENITY

FABULOUS SERENITY

Where to begin…

Little Wings helped us decide on Mccluskieganj as a holiday destination. Mr. Rajesh (LIttle Wings) was really helpful in providing us intricate details and places of special interest in this quaint yet beautiful hamlet even before we visited. This made our Holiday all the more enjoyable.

We spent two nights (24th & 25th September 2017) and it was wonderful. The place had just been renovated.

We chose Rana’s Country Cottage not only for its location, amazing gardens, staff and atmosphere but for the sheer ease of every aspect regarding the planning and execution of the days we were there.

The hospitality was simply outstanding. Never did we hear a NO from RANAJI and his team. The entire team could not have been more helpful, especially dealing with the number of requests we had. We were treated to fresh fish, chicken and mutton for lunch and dinner over the course of our stay. The owners were so welcoming, lots of lovely homely moments and memories.

The rooms were amazing and just off the main garden and it offered amazing serenity.

Highly recommended!

Thanks again to TEAM RANA’s COUNTRY COTTAGE & Little Wings. Rest assured we will be back soon.
