BISHNUPUR – “Temple Town” of West Bengal with a rare blend of rich Cultural background in Traditional Classical Music  renowned as “ BISHNUPUR GHARANA ” as Famous like “ MAIHAR GHARANA “ and is the only self-proprietary Traditional Classical Music GHARANA of the entire east region of our country. The foundation has been set up under the constant royal patronage of MALLABHUM  and the initiation has came through the hand of the  king RAGHUNATH SINGH MALLADEB at 1702, he himself invited USTAD BAHADUR KHAN from DELHI to lay the foundation of the Traditional Music of BISHNUPUR and later that has been carried away quite gracefully by SRI RAM KUMAR BHATTACHARYA and GADADHAR.

The BISHNUPUR has its own significantly rich historical past, each pasted terracotta tiles on the Temple wall carries that proudly since from the very beginning.

 

About BISHNUPUR……
BISHNUPUR is a town in the BANKURA District of West Bengal, was the capital of the MALLABHUM kingdom. The town has a glorious past that is reflected in its rich architecture, music and handicrafts such as pottery and weaving and more than a dozen terracotta temples. The land is also called MALLABHUM after the MALLAR rulers of this place. The MALLAR rulers were vaishnavites and built the famous terracotta temples during the 17th and 18th century at this place. The terracotta temples here are the best specimen of the classical style of Bengal architecture. These temples are presently maintained by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The Best terracotta works is to be seen on the wall of JORBANGLA, MADAN MOHAN, SHYAM RAI TEMPLE (PANCHARATNA TYPE (carrying five tomb on top), RADHA GOVINDA Temple, JOR Temple. Mostly depict the story of  Ramayana & Mahabharata and other immortal story related to indian mythology, somewhere the  day to day domestic life carved also what i have seen  on the wall of JOR BANGLA temple and pasted it on little wings still Photo Gallery as a proof of that.

# Apart from that if you have any interest on DEUL (one of the from of ODISHA architecture) must visit BAHULARA, the terracotta works on the wall is simply amazing and one of the properly maintained DEUL in India at a distance of 20 km approximately.

 

# SAYLESWAR & SARENDESWAR Temple stands on the bank of the river DWARAKESWAR at DIHORE Village just 16 km from BISHNUPUR, MAHESHWAR ( SHIVJI ) is deity of that Temple and founded by the MALLAR King PRITHVI MALLA in the year 1346 ( as per Bengali calendar year) and it follows the Architecture of the ODISHA temple. At that time the throne MALLAR ruler was the follower of the God MAHESHWAR (SHIVJI) after a certain period of time they himself converted to vaishnavites by the strong influence  of  the  pious preceptor  SRI …..

BISHNUPUR by Train:
From Howrah Jn (HWH) and Santragachi Jn (SRC) trains depart for Bishnupur in Kolkata. It takes about 3:30 to 4:15 hours from Kolkata.

BISHNUPUR by Road:
Regular buses are available from Kolkata (Esplanade/ Dharmatala), to Bishnupur.Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC) and South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) buses ply regularly. It takes about 4-5 hours to reach Bishnupur. The road distance is shorter than the rail distance, it is about 150 km.

By Own Vehicle you can go by road – From Kolkata travel to Dankuni, take the Durgapur Expressway, at Ratanpur crossing turn left and take the Sheoraphuli-Tarakeswar road, go straight through to Arambagh and Bishnupur.

BISHNUPUR is a town and a municipality in BANKURA District in the state of West Bengal.
It is about 160 km from KOLKATA (State capital of West Bengal). As a an old Town it’s very congested.

Mostly winter is the best season to visit BISHNUPUR, and enjoy this ancient temple town.

There are a number of budget hotels and average Luxury hotel available. Recently a Three star Hotel has been opened at BISHNUPUR with a small Pool Inside.
Government Tourist lodge is there offering good Bengali food.
If you want to stay outskirt of BISHNUPUR at a distance of 12 to 13 km approximately in an isolated good Resort with pool and inside the little warm wooden Tree House room, can be arranged.
